Making Data Count: Research data availability and research assessment
Berlin, Neue Mälzerei

http://makingdatacount.eventbrite.com

The possibilities of digital research have altered the production, publication and use of research results. Academic research practice and culture are changing or have already been transformed, but to a large degree the system of academic recognition has not yet adapted to the practices and possibilities of digital research. This applies especially to research data, which are increasingly produced, managed, published and archived, but hardly play a role in practices of research as-sessment.

Aim
The aim of the workshop is to bring experts and stakeholders from research institutions, universities, scholarly societies and funding agencies together in order to review, discuss and build on possibilities to implement the culture of sharing and to integrate publication of data into research assessment procedures.

Practical Information and Hotel
We can recommend booking a room at the NH hotel Alexanderplatz which is very close. This workshop is free of charge and Knowledge Exchange will cover the costs of lunches, coffees and teas. Registration is on a first come come first served basis.

Programme
Further background information on the event and the full programme are available through http://www.knowledge-exchange.info/Default.aspx?ID=576

Abr 4@8:00_Abr 5@17:00

EURODOC is the European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers.

http://lisbon2013.abic-online.org

Every year EURODOC convenes to an international conference for young researchers. The aim of the EURODOC conference is to provide the framework for young European researchers to meet with European political and economic leaders and to engage in fruitful discussions on the construction of the European Research and Higher Education Areas.

The following EURODOC Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting will be held in the auditorium of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon between the 4th and 5th April 2013.

EURODOC and ABIC aim to create an in-depth debate over a number of key issues the European Union (EU)
identified for European research within the areas of sustainable innovation and knowledge-based economy. Specifically, the role of early stage researchers in tackling issues like:

  1. Global warming, the tightening of energy supplies, security, ageing societies, pandemics and public health;
  2. The development of research helping to integrate citizens living in the EU by respecting differences, while reducing all sorts of communication barriers, discrimination, or marginalisation, that is, by contributing to consolidate a common European identity.

The EU has created programmes such as “Horizon 2020” as a means of boosting research, innovation and competitiveness in Europe. Horizon 2020 brings together EU research and innovation funding under a single programme. It focuses on turning scientific breakthroughs into innovative products and services providing citizens with business opportunities and better living conditions. At the same time it simplifies rules and procedures to attract more high level researchers and a broader range of innovative businesses.

Another example concerns the EU programme “Europe 2020”, where Europe’s growth strategy is outlined. Europe 2020 aims at developing tools to reach a more inclusive and sustainable economy being its goals set on employment, innovation, education, social inclusion and climate/energy. One of its structural axis is the framework “Energy 2020” containing five pillars for action: 1) increasing the use of renewable energy; 2) developing the internal integrated market; 3) ameliorating safety and security in terms of production and transportation; 4) promoting research and innovation policies; 5) bettering the exploitation of geopolitical strength.

Having this in mind, EURODOC 2013 annual conference will include four plenary sessions with distinguished speakers from various European, international and national institutions and organisations. The topics are as follows:

  • Plenary Session I: The EU 2020 Framework Programmes for Research and Sustainable Innovation
  • Plenary Session II: Growing in a healthy environment: New trends in research
  • Plenary Session III: Working and researching within the framework of a sustainable society
  • Plenary Sessions IV: Science, Communication and Social Change

The two last days of the Conference, 6th and 7th April 2013, are solely dedicated to EURODOC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM). The Administrative Board’s annual report, will be presented by the President; the presentation of the financial report, including the accounts, will be given by the Treasurer; it will also take place the ratification of decisions taken by the Administrative Board since the last General Meeting and the election of new a Governing Board and Secretariat.

ISKO UK BIENNIAL CONFERENCE: Knowledge Organization – Pushing the BoundariesISKO UK BIENNIAL CONFERENCE: Knowledge Organization – Pushing the Boundaries
Jul 7_Jul 9 todo o dia

Knowledge Organization (KO) is not just a fascinating research domain to attract our foremost thinkers; it also presents practical challenges to each of us as individuals, sorting out the files on our desktops physical and virtual, searching for inspiration via the Internet, or participating in the fora of social media. But there’s a paradox: while KO practices permeate society, the name “Knowledge Organization” is known only to a few. Invisible boundaries separate KO researchers from the practitioners who could benefit from their findings, and also come between distinct fields of application such as records management, web design, librarianship, information retrieval, etc.

Open Repositories 2013Open Repositories 2013 @ Prince Edward Island
Jul 7_Jul 12 todo o dia

This year’s conference theme is Use, Reuse, Reproduce. One of the most important roles of repositories is to enable greater use and reuse of their contents— whether those contents are library collections, scholarly articles, research data, or software—and metadata. The notion of use and reuse can be extended to repository infrastructure as well. Many repositories are based on open source software that can be freely reused and adapted to serve local needs; other efforts are also emerging both in conjunction with and outside traditional repository platforms to encourage discipline or community specific reuse and sharing of software, services, and infrastructure. In addition there is a growing interest and need to document and share the code and workflows used to produce research results – particularly in computationally intensive fields – in order to promote reproducible research.

The University of Edinburgh with support from the Digital Curation Centre, EDINA, and Edinburgh University Library are delighted to announce that after its temporary incorporation into Open Repositories 2012 the Repository Fringe will return as a standalone event this year to be held in the Informatics Forum from 31 July to 2 August 2013. Further sponsors and supporters to be announced.

Repository Fringe aims to showcase a range of innovative repository and related developments to coincide with ‘preview week’ that precedes the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Designed for an audience of developers and coders, repository managers and practitioners, the programme retains an ‘unconference’ feel to it, and seeks to canvas contribution from a wide range of repository actors for:

* Live demonstrations of innovative work;

* “Lightning” presentations on any subject relating to current, or future repository endeavours;

* Facilitated Round Table discussions;

* Tutorials and presentations on related topics;

* Workshops and developer day activities including a ‘Code Challenge’;

* Last but not least, after a notable presentation at the 2011 event we are also happy to accept presentations with live musical accompaniment!

Keynote speakers will open and close Repository Fringe 2013.

The dates of the event coincide with the start of the Edinburgh Festival season, which includes the Edinburgh Art Festival, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Edinburgh International Festival , Edinburgh International Book Festival, as well as the usual impromptu street theatre, musicians and sideshows.

Registration for this free event will open shortly

University accommodation is available on a first-come, first-served basis, details are available athttp://www.book.accom.ed.ac.uk/. Please note, accommodation is in high demand at that time of year so early booking is advisable.
