Open Repositories Conference in Helsinki in June 2014Open Repositories Conference in Helsinki in June 2014

Call for Proposals

The Ninth International Conference on Open Repositories, OR2014, will be held 9-13 June 2014 in Helsinki, Finland. The organizers are pleased to invite you to contribute to the program. This year’s conference theme is:

Towards Repository Ecosystems

Repository systems are but one part of the ecosystem in 21st century research, and it is increasingly clear that no single repository will serve as the sole resource for its community. How can repositories best be positioned to offer complementary services in a network that includes research data management systems, institutional and discipline repositories, publishers, and the open Web? When should service providers build to fill identified niches, and where should they connect with related services?  How might these networks offer services to support organizations that lack the resources to build their own, or researchers seeking to optimize their domain workflows?

Examining how repositories best integrate into the holistic research flow; exploring ties between domain-specific repositories and institutional repositories; and understanding durable content strategies outside of traditional repository environments are the central themes of the Open Repositories 2014 conference. We welcome proposals on these themes, but also on the theoretical, practical, organizational or administrative topics related to digital repositories. We’re particularly interested in hearing about:

  • Unconventional approaches to repository-like services
  • Interconnection between publishers and repositories
  • Researcher-centered design for scholarly workflows
  • Adaptations to support curation lifecycle management, e.g., for research data
  • Real-world scalability and performance stories: working at web-scale, with big data for global usage
  • Requirements for holding restricted or classified data in repositories
  • Infrastructure to accommodate national and international mandates for data management and open access
  • Positioning repositories closer to (local, consortial, or cloud-based) cyberinfrastructure for data processing
  • Leveraging connections to external services including:
    • Remote identifier services (e.g., DOI, ORCID)
    • (Re-)using repository data/metadata in new and unexpected ways, including integrated discovery
    • Scholarly social media services, such as for annotation, review, comment, reputation, citation, and altmetrics
    • CRIS and research management systems
    • Digital preservation tools, services & infrastructure
  • Community and sustainability in an open world

Libraries in the Digital Age (LIDA) 2014 @ University of Zadar, Zadar, Croatia
Jun 15_Jun 19 todo o dia

“Libraries in the Digital Age (LIDA) is a biennial international conference that focuses on the transformation of libraries and information services in the digital environment. In recognition of evolving online and social technological influences that present both challenges and opportunities, “ASSESSMENT” is the theme for LIDA 2014. The conference theme is divided into two parts. The first part addresses advances in qualitative assessment methods and practices and the second part covers assessment methods involving alternative metrics based on social media and a wider array of communicative activities, commonly referred to as “altmetrics.” While qualitative methods have a long tradition of application, altmetrics are a set of new approaches to filtering information and to evaluating scholarly communication and research, with possible application to libraries as well. LIDA 2014 brings together researchers, educators, and practitioners from all over the world in a forum for personal exchanges, discussions, and learning, made memorable by being held in an enchanting and spectacularly beautiful city on the shore of the Adriatic Sea.”

Open Science Days 2014 @ Harnack House
Out 13_Out 14 todo o dia

The Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) cordially invites you to participate in the Open Science Days 2014.

The event, which will take place at the Harnack House in Berlin, is going to extend over one and a half days (October 13/14) and will include various forms of talks as well as a panel discussion.

In the context of the conference we would like to deal with various aspects of a global movement towards a more open and transparent approach to science.

The international discussion in this area, among other things, is focused on

  • public access to research outcome in the form of publications (Open Access)
  • a free access to research data (Open Research Data)
  • access to and cross-linking of public data stocks (Linked Open Data)
  • the quest for alternative solutions to the traditional review processes provided by journal publishers, in order to improve transparency in this field (Open Review)
  • the development and usage of Open Source software for research activity
  • the involvement of amateur or non-professional scientists in the research process (Citizen Science)

All those aspects share the endeavor for an opening of established scientific processes with regard to a greater availability, transparency and networking (Openness).

Are we experiencing another hype or do those movements related to the concept of Open Science achieve a real progress for the future of research?

What are the experiences of those who recently tried to put these concepts into practice?

In the area of Open Access some noticeable success has already been achieved – but, looking at the other fields of Open Science, do we see realistic chances for a profound transformation of the established system?

The event is directed at researchers and specialists from inside and especially from outside the Max Planck Society who are interested in an interdisciplinary communication about Open Science.

Participants will have the opportunity to present their own ideas, experiences, initiatives or activities and to discuss current topics related to the scopes mentioned above.

3rd National Open Access Workshop @ Council of Higher Education
Out 20_Out 21 todo o dia

Removal of the obstacles to access information will both increase the quality of information produced and enable the rapid development of society with high value-added products and services. For this reason, developed societies have been making legal regulations to provide everyone with free access to scientific publications and research data supported by public funds and implementing very important incentives in this issue.

The Council of Higher Education (CoHE) is going to host 3rd National Open Access Workshop that will be held on 20-21 October 2014 with the intention to discuss open access of scientific publications and research data produced in our country through institutional digital archives and the necessary policy, strategy, legislation and open access infrastructure for this (Workshop Program). The problems and new developments concerning open access issue will be discussed from different perspectives in the meeting where national and international experts and invited speakers will participate.

Launched in January 2014 and being conducted currently, “Higher Education Academic Repository Project” is one of the most important agenda of the meeting. Developments, the current situation, and targets related to the project will be shared with participants. It is believed that the discussions with international experts participating in this meeting will strengthen the studies we are conducting, and empower our goals for the future.

On grounds that “Higher Education Academic Repository Project”, which we believe, is an important milestone on access to scientific information, the goal of the meeting is to introduce the project more closely to partners and get the thoughts and support of the whole stakeholders. All the publishing world, public institutions, private sector representatives, project funders and particularly our universities are the target audience of the meeting.

As the Council of Higher Education, we are pleased to host this meeting in which issues related to scientific knowledge production and sharing will be discussed.

8th International Conference on Metadata and Semantic Research (MTSR 2014)
Nov 27_Nov 29 todo o dia

AIM AND SCOPE

Cultural Heritage collections are essential knowledge infrastructures that provide a solid representation of the historical background of human communities. These knowledge infrastructures are constructed from and integrate cultural information derived from diverse memory institutions, mainly museums, archives and libraries. Each individual community has spent a lot of effort in order to develop, support and promote its own metadata as tools for the description and dissemination of cultural information, mainly related to its particular resources and use.

The exposure of cultural information into the Semantic Web makes clear that metadata have to be accurate and deeply interpretable in the semantic level. Conceptual Reference Models could facilitate these procedures since they constitute conceptualizations – according to the specific point of view of a memory institution or its particular community – providing at the same time the context for interpreting the respecting metadata to their domain of discourse. CRMs have also been viewed as global schemata in order to map different metadata specifications. At the same time, there are also inter-domain efforts targeted to semantically align data (research data, educational data, public sector information etc.) to cultural information. The management of the cultural information provides challenges associated with (i) metadata modeling, specification, standardization, extraction, evaluation, mapping, integration and effective use, (ii) knowledge representation as conceptualization to provide the context for unambiguously interpreting metadata, and (iii) information integration from different contexts for the provision of integrated access and advanced services to the users.

The aim of this Special Track is to maintain a dialogue where researchers and practitioners working on all the aspects of the cultural information will come together and exchange ideas about open issues in all stages of the metadata life cycle. The track also welcomes works for the connection and interlinking of the Cultural Heritage metadata to any other dataset published in the Semantic Web universe.

TOPICS

The papers in this special track should be original and of high quality, addressing issues in areas such as:

  • Cultural heritage metadata models, standards, interoperability, mappings and integration
  • Automated metadata extraction
  • Ontologies and knowledge representation for the cultural heritage domain
  • Extracting semantics, entities, and patterns from Cultural Heritage collections
  • Collection models and item – collection relationships representation
  • Collection – level metadata modeling and management
  • Linked open data approaches for the cultural heritage domain
  • Composite content-discovery and management of components and interrelationships
  • Large volume content management – high resolution image data sets
  • 3D models-indexing, storage and retrieval approaches
  • Federation of repositories/data infrastructures
  • Integration of intra or inter disciplinary heterogeneous resources
  • Infrastructures for sharing content
  • Digital Curation workflows and models
  • Preservation metadata for cultural heritage digital objects
  • Metadata quality metrics
  • Case studies
